Complications of bronchiectasis
- Chronic respiratory failure can occur when lung function declines and around 7 to 8% of patients may need long term oxygen therapy (LTOT) at home.
- Fatigue is commonly reported by patients which is related to breathlessness but this is not always correlate with lung function.
- Bleeding from lungs can occur with infections. It may be small streaks or larger amounts. It can be life threatening and an emergency if there is frank (bright red) blood in large amounts. New episodes of bleeding should be reported to a doctor immediately.
- Depression and anxiety are more common as quality of life deteriorates and can be linked to breathlessness and exercise limitations. Interventions such as mindfulness and anxiety management can be helpful.
