How to help your patient get the most out of inhalers
- A check of the patient's inhaler technique should be done at each medical review. Alternatively pharmacists can help to check inhaler technique and offer support.
- It is important to wash out the mouth after use of steroid inhalers to avoid thrush. If this problem persists, advise the patient to try rinsing and gargling with water and/or brushing their teeth after using the inhaler. If this is unsuccessful, offer the patient a steroid inhaler with a spacer.
- Store inhalers at the correct temperature (see manufacturer's instructions in the packaging).
- Always keep the cap on inhaler when not using to prevent dust getting in to the mouthpiece or medication accidentally being released.
- Clean inhalers as per manufacturer's instructions using a clean dry tissue.
