Exercise recommendations
The UK Department of Health recommend the following level of exercise per week for adults:
- Over a week 150 minutes (2.5 hours) or more of moderate intensity activity in bouts of 10 minutes or more. E.g. 30 mins on 5 days a week.
- Strengthening activities 2 days a week.
- While people are attending Pulmonary Rehabilitation they are encouraged to do a third exercise session per week in order to meet these guidelines.
Some people with chronic lung disease may find it difficult to meet these recommendations. It may be more achievable if they gradually increase their activity levels, aiming for 10 minutes of activity at a time.
Examples of physical activity include:
- Walking.
- Gardening.
- Housework.
- Getting off the bus 1 stop early.
- Walking the dog.
- Dancing.
- Climbing the stairs.
- Swimming.
- Walking around the house.
