Bronchodilators (Beta antagonists) - Side effects

The following cautions and side effects are applicable to both short and long acting Beta-2 adrenoceptor agonists.

  • Commonly heart palpitations or faster beats.
  • Peripheral tremors especially in the hands.
  • Headaches.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Very occasionally, patients may report that their chest feels tighter after taking a bronchodilator. This may be due to paradoxical bronchospasm and is the opposite of what the drug is intended to do. Patients should be seen by medical staff if this occurs.
