What happens after a person dies?
In Scotland a death must be registered within 8 days. You may need to advise the family what to do.
To register a death an appointment should be made at the nearest registrar’s office.
- When attending to register the death the family or carer will need a Medical Certificate Cause of Death (MCCD) or form 11 which will be completed by the deceased GP or the hospital doctor who was caring for them at the time of death. Also take any other documents which are available such as the deceased birth certificate, marriage certificate, an NHS medical card and along with any proof you have of any government pension or fund that has been paid.
- Once the death has been registered a form 14 Certificate Registration of Death and an abbreviated Death Certificate will be issued. The form 14 will be required by the funeral director before funeral arrangements can be made.
